Can eat borscht with pancreatitis?

472

Classic dishes that you are used to eating in your diet (including your favourite borscht), in pancreatitis can cause GI system upset and a new attack ?

That’s why you should try to stick to a special diet that excludes spicy, salty, smoked, fatty and fried foods ❌

But does this mean that you have to completely exclude borscht from your diet? I’m happy to tell you, no. All you’ll need to do is tweak the recipe. And who knows, maybe you’ll even like the new version of borscht better ?

  • So, is it possible to eat borscht with pancreatitis?
  • YES, but only if you have chronic pancreatitis with persistent remission.
  • YES, if you have already tried and tolerate other cabbage dishes well.
  • YES, if you make borscht without a rich broth, frying and spicy spices.

There are 2 options, how and what you can replace the rich meat broth that you can not:

  1. Vegetable broth. Boil the broth on potatoes and carrots, later add beetroot and pre-boiled meat: chicken, turkey or beef.
  2. Third broth. You can also boil borscht on the third broth. When the meat boils (use only lean meat), drain the water and add a new portion of water. And so several times. On the third broth you can already cook borscht.

With the broth sorted out. Now about cabbage and frying.

Since cabbage in fresh and sauerkraut you can not use, give preference to Peking cabbage.

Frying vegetables for borscht (roasting) replace stewing. Believe me, it will greatly reduce the load on your GI tract.

And a few words about serving borscht. When it is infused, serve and eat it warm, not hot. If you want (and you can) sour cream, choose it with a low % fat content.

Important: if you have acute pancreatitis, it is strictly forbidden to eat borscht. Because meat and vegetable broth will irritate the mucous membranes of the GI tract, cabbage contributes to flatulence and severe pain, and tomatoes will increase acidity.
